Dunkirk

Dunkirk
------------------------------------------------
It's not a typical war movie to begin with. If you go for this movie keeping conventions used to make war movies till now in mind, it might surprise you.
Dunkirk doesn't have many dialouges, no character comes with back story, there is no emphasis on making hero out of any of them, there is no stumoch wrenching violence and there is little drama or emotional backdrop to make your eyes moist. Still Dunkirk works. Refusal of being another conventional war movie makes it path breaking epic.
Dunkirk is survival story of defeated soldiers trying to retreat to homeland. They are being bombarded from all sides by Nazis and Nolan put us between them, like we are one of them.
Dunkirk grabs you by your neck from first scene and never lets you breath easily. You can really feel the plight of soldiers fighting for their lives, it's like first person experiene of real war.
When bunch of soldiers fight for breathing  under water in sinking ship, you feel like you are drowning with them. Such is intensity!
There is purpose behind no character development. In tense moments when life is at stake, you can hardly think of back story. It's all about that moment, its just about you survive or not. I don't think there was scope for character development and back stories, it might have turned out to be distraction. It's more about struggle of nearly 400,000 men who are just concerned about their lives. Don't think they had time to think about anything other than saving their lives.
Choosing unfamiliar faces and scattering them all over is masterstroke by Nolan as none of them grab our attention more than necessary.
'Hero Can be anyone' Nolan uses quote from his movie to perfection here. Every individual who helped their hand out for evacuation is hero. A civilian taking his yatch to Dunkirk or RAF pilot destroying German planes, Nolan crafts their heroism beautifully without impacting intense nature of plot.
There is not much scope for actors to show individual brilliance but there are many scenes where just glaring eyes and helpless looking faces make quite an impact.
Hans Zimmer's epic tense score and breathtaking cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema are two more inseparable dimensions of Dunkirk.
Out of 400,000 men, some couldn't make to other shore, some survived and some men helped them to survive. Christopher Nolan have told us the story of resilience of these men and it is sense-shattering! A sense of relief on soldier's face after successfully making it to homeland speak more than words! And there lies essence.
Dunkirk is masterpiece!!
